But what is turning? And how is it performed in mechanical industries?
We denote by the term “turning” the machining process in which a lathe is used to remove excess material from metal; there are several tools that, in conjunction with the lathe, allow you to achieve exactly the result you are looking for.
This process takes place through the work of the machinery – the lathe – on which the workpiece is fixed; the latter undergoes a rotary motion and is engraved by a tool that, in contact with the metal component, removes excess material and shapes the surface.
As mentioned earlier, turning operations are of paramount importance to obtain particular metal components with holes or notches on both the inner and outer surfaces; in the case of particularly small metal components, these are identified as turned metal small parts.
The main turning operations are: drilling, tapping and reaming.
The first, metal drilling, is the process by which the cutting tool enters the workpiece, creating a hole; the second, metal tapping, is the operation by which internal threading-performed after the process of drilling by means of a tap – can be achieved; reaming, on the other hand, is the process of finishing holes that, in contrast to what was seen previously, is performed while the workpiece is in motion and the tool remains stationary.
These operations take place on the inner surface of the metal component while, on the outer surface of the metal, the most important machining operations are: grooving and threading.
