Cold forming VS hot forming: an environmental choice

The search for more sustainable processes has become a key priority in every sector, including the manufacture of metal components. In particular, in this context the focus is increasingly focusing on practices that reduce the environmental impact and cold deformation of metals emerges absolutely as an ecological and efficient solution compared to hot working.

In Prodotti EBI, with our experience over 100 years in the production of metal components for cold deformation, we can absolutely assert ourselves as exponents at the forefront of the sector and as an example of how it is possible to reconcile industrial production and environmental sustainability, remaining faithful to its values for many years.

Reduction of energy consumption in metalworking

The first and most tangible of the advantages of choosing cold deformation in the manufacture of metal components for automotive and agricultural machinery is the significant reduction in energy consumption. While hot working requires high temperatures to shape the metal, cold deformation occurs at room temperatures; this means that there is no need to use a large amount of energy to heat the metals. This allows us to significantly reduce the overall energy footprint of the production process.

Lower greenhouse gas emissions

Traditional hot metal processing involves the emission of a considerable amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, mainly due to the combustion of fuels used to heat metals. As a result, cold deformation, which does not require an increase in temperatures, almost completely eliminates the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production process. The production of metal components by cold deformation contributes significantly to the reduction of the greenhouse effect and the consequent slowdown of climate change.

Extreme reduction of waste and raw material consumption

As previously seen, the cold deformation of metals has direct energy and environmental advantages; in addition to this, it also offers indirect benefits that contribute to the overall sustainability of the production process.

The hot working of metals often leads to the formation of waste and residues while cold working, using thinner and lighter materials and acting by deformation, greatly reduces the amount of waste produced (technically defined “extruded”) and optimizes the use of raw materials avoiding unnecessary waste.

Improved efficiency of metal components

The metal components produced by cold deformation have the particular characteristic of having a greater resistance and a longer life in time than those obtained by hot deformation, because the intrinsic properties of the material are not altered. This results in a lower need to replace components over time, with a positive effect on the entire production process: less greenhouse gas emissions, less energy consumption, less waste and waste production.

In an era in which environmental sustainability is a top priority, in front of which it is impossible to turn a blind eye, cold deformation – cold working of metals in which Prodotti EBI has specialized since 1903 – represents an ecological and responsible solution for the production of metal components. By reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and raw material consumption, this processing method offers a number of environmental benefits that not only contribute to environmental protection, but also allow to obtain high quality products that ensure optimal performance and durability.
