During the design phase, it is already necessary to identify which mold methodology is most suitable for production and the reasons.
In Prodotti EBI we are able to obtain any type of product both by using progressive molds and transfer molds. In both cases, the production material is a sheet metal strip, but its function and use change considerably in the two processes.

What are the determining factors for the choice? First of all, the optimization of resources: to obtain precise and performing results with the least amount of waste.
Let’s find out the other variables to evaluate!

Mold construction’s difficulty

Each phase of the transfer mold is independent from the others; this implies greater ease of construction and a total absence of additional components necessary to proceed with production.

The progressive mold, on the other hand, has all the phases strongly interconnected with each other: in addition to the mold, the web guide, the riser and other elements are required.
It is therefore more expensive to implement and requires longer times to be put into operation.

Need to eliminate the starting material

In the progressive mold, the piece proceeds autonomously between the different molding stations and only at the end, thanks to a final blanking, does the base material detach from the molded piece.

On the contrary, the transfer mold is designed to eliminate the excess every time the molded piece is moved from one process to another through transfer bars. The different times with which the elimination of the base material takes place have repercussions on the final aesthetics of the product: better for the transfer mold, slightly worse for the progressive mold.

Type of production

The methodology used in the transfer mold makes production slower, as the piece has to be moved every time, and makes it more suitable for the realization of more complex components that require machining that would not be possible if the piece were anchored to the base material.

In the progressive mold the piece proceeds autonomously thus ensuring faster production: one or more molded pieces are in fact ready for each press stroke! Not only that: the speed of the progressive mold makes it more suitable for the production of small components in large series.Considering which type of mold is best suited to meet the customer’s needs is a fundamental step in obtaining an excellent result with low costs and without unnecessary waste of material.

Do you want to know which type of mold is most suitable for the production of your molded pieces and the relative advantages?
Contact us, we will be happy to answer your questions!

Producing metal components for competitive industrial sectors, like automotive and agriculture as in our case, means having a clear idea […]

[11
