Sheet metal bending, for metal’s cold processing

After talking about deep drawing, blanking and punching, today we take you into the world of sheet metal bending: a permanent deformation of the sheet metal performed “cold” through a bending action!

The goal of bending? To obtain semi-finished or finished products of the desired shape, simply by bending metal.

Plastics metal, the allies in sheet metal bending processes

Not all metals are suitable to be subjected to this type of treatment, that’s why it is always important to perform an accurate feasibility study and choose only a metal that is sufficiently moldable, so that no breakage occurs near the bend.

The bending technique can be performed on metals that have a “neutral fiber”, located in the center of the thickness of the sheet, which has the unique characteristic of deforming without stretching or contracting. Another factor to be taken into great consideration before subjecting the sheet metal to bending is the springback of the chosen metal, which is specific to each material and can be determined and corrected in advance.

The bending process in fact acts with a force that goes to stretch the internal fibers of the sheet, which involves a translation of the neutral fiber inward and an accumulation of stresses in the material, which are released once the bending operation of the sheet is completed, thus determining the phenomenon of elastic return. Knowing how to determine in advance the entity of the elastic return of the metal on which we want to perform a bending is of fundamental importance in order to obtain the desired final shape, avoiding breakage or rippling.

Sheet metal bending techniques

There are different types of sheet metal bending, some of them are carried out using a special machine, called a bender (such as air bending or flattening), while others are carried out using a traditional mechanical press; in the latter case, we can talk about die bending or coining.

It is precisely this process that we carry out every day at Prodotti EBI!
When coining is carried out, the sheet metal is compressed between the punch and the die so that it takes on the final, curved shape desired and designed in advance. To carry out the process, a die of the most appropriate shape is used depending on the type of bending that is to be obtained; once the die has been chosen, the press exerts on the punch the necessary force to carry out the bending.

Thanks to the bending of the sheet metal in the die, it is possible to work on large batches, maximizing time and resources for production.
